A Gurston Snapshot…
To start the New Year it’s time to hand over to the SW Centre chairman Doug Auld for his annual message to the nation. Well, to BARC SW Centre members anyway.
‘As I look out over my garden at the start of December it’s evident that winter’s icy fingers are finally upon us and September’s final Gurston championship round seems an age ago. But the work continues at a pace for 2013 which will be here before we know it, so get spannering!
2012 started off with us winning the Norrie Galbraith award for the best BHC round in 2011. There was a lot of house work at the hill, a new electric supply, a new garage ( thanks to Duncan Barnes and Dave Wickham for all their work), new spectator benches (thanks to Roy Barker) and a massive clearance of trees and over hanging branches.
It was a season filled with a lot of highs. Paul Webster managed to get a record total entry for 2012 which meant a lot of hard work, hats off to him. We held our first ever round of the Midland Hillclimb Championship and Spire FM Race Day, where Keith Murray grabbed the ‘Gurston Grand’. We held two rounds of the BHC. Congratulations to Simon Thornley for winning the Gates of Brockenhurst Gurston Championship and to Tony Wiltshire for winning the Top Ten Challenge; both drivers put on a fantastic show for spectators and competitors alike. We held a BARC Centenary Hog Roast in August with two live Bands, and we’ll repeat that this coming season. We had the Supercar Day and of course the Awards Dinner in November. Mike Reed and Simon McBeath put a lot of time and effort into advertising, with Mike getting a regular ‘Jingle slot’ on Spire FM. Spectator numbers were a bit static but in the middle of a recession I think all things considered it was good work done. The Drivers School supported by Chris Cannell‘s “CCS” had a very good year.
2013 at Gurston
So what of 2013? Well first we have a new Championship scoring system (check the website) which is far fairer and will mean that competitors from any class can win the Championship. And there are now 5 rounds with 4 to count, with a doubleheader in June. Jonathan Gates has again agreed to be our Sponsor. We’re having a new Formula Ford class for Kent-engined cars up to 1994, Historic Lotus’s, Midland Hillclimb Championship again in July, two rounds of the BHC again and lots more.
Can I thank Rob and Phil Hitchings, our land owners, for all their help, the marshals without whom nothing would happen and finally to the Committee and non-committee members who put so much time and effort into running your hillclimb.
So get your entries in for another fantastic season at Gurston. Entries can of course be made online via www.gurstondownentries.co.uk. This has now become the most common method and allows us to keep costs down. You will still be able to download entries from www.gurstondown.org
