Sunday 22nd April brings the motorbikes and combinations from the Autocycle Union’s (ACU) National Hill Climb Championship to Gurston Down Speed Hill Climb.
The riders and their machines always produce some spectacular racing and Sunday will not disappoint. Check some of our videos posted on Facebook!
The Solo Motor Cycles 100cc to 250cc class, goes first, it has just two entries. Neal Jillings and Allan Harvey on their Honda CRF and Huish Yamaha YZ respectively.
The bigger Solo Motor Cycles 351cc to 500cc class, goes next. Callum Short who was the winner of the 250cc class last year is back on a bigger 450cc KTM. But he really does have some stiff competition: Chris Keates (Honda CRF); Mark Tilley (Honda CR) and Richard Bowker (Honda CRF) to name just a few. Chris won last year by just 0.21s ahead of Mark.
The Solo Motor Cycles 501cc to 750cc class had seven entries. All these riders are super competitive and many in the top ten hill climbers in 2017. It will probably between Peter Short and his KTM, Tommy Hodges (KTM SMR), Mark Short (Aprilia SVX) and Keith Haines (Aprilia SVX). Last year Tommy managed a 34.11s rin, just 0.88s quicker than Peter!
The Solo Motor Cycles 751cc to 1300cc class sees another big class entry. Stuart Mills on his Aprilla Tuono won at last years meeting. Stuart has Paul Jeffery (KTM) and Allan Jolly (Aprilia TZV) and four other riders to contend with. These riders will be contenders for the Fastest Time of the Day and the Top Ten Run-Off!
And then it’s the turn of the motorbike and side car combinations! The side cars are a proper spectacle! The pillion (passenger) only stays on by holding on buy their feet and hands, no seat belts or harnesses. The pillion hanging on or sometimes out of the combination!
The current hill record holding combination returns with a different pillion passenger. Ian Guy holds the record set in 2017 at 35.09s. The previous record holders also compete. Patrick and Paul Keates on the Baker F1.
Then the bikes will have a Top Ten Run-off. The Ten fastest motorbikes and combinations will compete again to score additional points. Last years winner was Stuart Mills on 34.02s.

2018 Season Opening Weekend – Day Two Sunday 22nd April
The 2018 Gurston Down Speed Hill Climb, second event of the season first weekend the Sunday 22nd April rounds three and four of the Meadens Skoda Championship and the second round of the Cavendish Ships Stores Top Ten Challenge.
The weekend’s events are the season’s openers and will provide a glorious show of sound, smell, speed and skill. Around 130 cars and drivers, motorbikes and riders competing in different cars, motorbikes and classes, in everything from your average standard road car, classic and modern sports and saloon cars and purpose built, fast sport, single seat racing cars, high performance motorbikes and ex-F1 side-car combinations. All of them will pit their wits against the fast and twisty course at Wiltshire’s famous Speed Hill Climb Venue. They will also be competing against each other and themselves too!
With the recent course changes, spectators have superb and unrivalled views of the event, access to the hill, paddock and facilities.
You really can’t get closer to the action!
Sunday also brings the ACU’s Motorbikes and Combinations for their first of three visits to Gurston Down. Not only do they bring some exciting viewing but speed comes too. The fastest bikes and side-car combinations produced stunning times.
Fastest Times of the Day will probably go to Wallace Menzies in the Gould GR59M for the cars but the bikes is more difficult to predict, with some of the finest hill climb riders in the country being present.

SUNDAY 22nd APRIL
Sunday’s meeting gets under way with the invited classes. First up will be the Triumph Register Car Class. There is a huge entry with some great looking cars. The TR8 V8 of Roderick Warner to dominated this class last year. Nick Smith and his TR6 and Tony Browne in his lovely Dolomite Sprint were second and third respectively. Can either of these two or any of the drivers catch Roderick?
Next up are the Austin Healey – Big Healey and Warwick Cars. Richard Mason in his 3000 Mk2 beat Pat Cooper (100/6) and Paul Baker (3000) last year. However, with eight entries it might be a little tougher at the top!
The Healey Sprite Class ventures up the hill. There are three cars enteted and four drivers. The Sebring Sprite of Phil Gardner should, on paper at least, be the quickest but Colin Gale has hill experience and was third last year by less than half a second. Last years winner and second aren’t entered so this class could be anyone’s!
Batch Three starts with the Morgan Cars Class. The Plus 8 of Robert Toon has the power! Paul Clarke and his Lightweight and the other two entrants won’t let Robert walk away with the win.
For the second time this weekend and to complete the third batch it’s the lovely cars that form the ‘Classic Marques Speed Championship’ Class. It will be interesting to see how the Saturday winners perform. All of the cars in this class are beautifully presented cars, take a look around the paddock when you can.
Batch Four brings the Mazda MX5 Class, sponsored by The Window Doctor back for the third and four round of their championship. Last year’s Meadens Skoda Gurston Down Champion, Mark Crookall and his RS will have got the measure of the competition by today. It’ll be interesting to see how hard Mark is going to have to work to retain his class title and class record.
The New Road Going Series Production up to 1400cc. John Davey, the MD of our Top Ten Challenge sponsor, in his quick MG Midget is running on his on today. Class win, one would hope so! New Class record…. Perhaps….
The Road Going Series Production Class, 1401cc to 2000cc, sponsored by Record-Designs runs next. Tim Foster, last years class champion, and his lovely Lotus Elan start favourite. But Dean Cubitt’s MX5 and Paul Dickinson’s Honda S2000 will make sure he really has to work for the win. And look out for some surprises.
The Over 2000cc Road Going Series Production Class, sponsored by Turbo Dynamics, round off this batch. Stephen Moore, Mitsubishi Evo 6 RS, last years class champion, is back. He’ll have a great scrap with Simon Neve and his Evo 6 RS. On last years form, it is probably Stephen for the win but with the company he has in this class, you shouldn’t be betting your shirt on it.
The Road Going Specialist Production Class, sponsored by Fieldfare Trailers, will start batch five. We will have found out how quick the Lotus Elise with Tony Wiltshire at the wheel after Saturday’s runs. Will it be Clive Skipper in his 2.0 Caterham HPC or Adrian Lewis in his Westfield today?
The Over 2000cc Modified Limited Production Marque Sports Car Class sees the four driver / car combinations entered on Saturday. Will it be Simon Purcell or Graham Beale today?
The up to 1400cc Modified Series Production Class, sponsored by Cock and Sons (General Builders) has three super fast Minis entered. The form would suggest James White should take this one but it’s such a competitive class, we will have to wait to find out who will take the honors.
The Over 2000cc Modified Series Production Class, sponsored by Meadens Skoda, sees a similar entry to Saturday plus the Porsche 930RS of Phil Price. The the extra Porsche into the mix who’ll be fastest in this class. The Painter / Fraser car?
The over 2000cc Modified Specialist Production Class, sponsored by Gates of Brockenhurst, has a three car line up. Yesterday’s result will give us an idea of what today might bring. It could be anyone’s and will be down to the best performance on the day.
The Historically Interesting Class, sponsored by Kelvin Jouhar, finishes batch five. The class sees Geoff Hunt and the lovely Lotus 22 back for the first time this season. He will make sure everyone else in this class will work hard to win. But who will it be?
Batch Six runs next. Mark Mortimer in his Mallock17b will come to the line first with the only entry in the Hillclimb Super Sports Class.
The New Sports Libre up to 1400cc Class’s second outing of the season has a similar entry to Saturday. Gurston Down’s Driver School Principle, Tim Pitfeild is likely to head this class but we will know how hard he will need to work to win.
Sports Libre 1400cc to 2000cc Class has just one official entry, Keith Diggle’s WEV HCS-BDG. He may be joined by Chris Cannell and the Empire Evo. Chris and the Evo will probably win this one.
The Sports Libre up to 2000cc Class see that Chevrolet Camero Z28 of Jeffery Way is back and joins Geoff Twemlow’s, Subaru powered, Saker GT today. Geoff and the Saker should take this class but the Camero makes a spectacular sound!
The next cars in the batch are the racing cars. The up to 600cc Racing Car Class sees just one car entered in the class, David Cuff and his Mk4 Jedi.
The 601cc to 1100cc Racing Car Class, sponsored by Drynham Project Management, has a good entry on Sunday. James Moore, the 2017 Cavendish Ships Stores Top Ten Challenge winner will be the hot favourite. But the class is so competitive, it will be down to the hundredth of a second to decide the win and the challenge points!
The 1101cc to 1600cc Racing Car Class, sponsored by SM AeRo Techniques, sees Peter D Smith and Richard Gaylard back out in their shared Force PC. There are three other drivers who will be working to stop them take the win.

2018 Season Opener – Saturday 21st
The 2018 Gurston Down Speed Hill Climb season gets underway on the Saturday 21st April with the first two rounds of the Meadens Skoda Championship and the Cavendish Ships Stores Top Ten Challenge. 2108 promises to be an exciting season!

Saturday April 21st sees Gurston hosts a number of national championships. In addition to the first two rounds of the Meadens Skoda Championship and the first round of the Cavendish Ships Stores Top Ten Challenge.
The ACSMC hold a round of their championship, as do the Porsche Club, the TVR Club, Classic Marques Cars and pre-War Austin 7s. On top of all those championships there is the usual mix of production-based machines, sports racing cars and single seaters’.
Fastest Time of the Day is the ultimate goal for a competitors. With Wallace Menzies and his stunningly fast Cosworth powered Gould GR 59M, it’s going to be tough for anyone to come close. Wallace, who finished second in the British Hill Climb Championship in 2017 carries the number 2. Look out for the Wallace, he’ll be fast. He currently holds the speed record for the finish line at over 159mph. Remember the track is just over 12 feet wide!
SATURDAY 21st APRIL
Saturday’s meeting gets under way with the invited classes. First up should be the Pre-War Austin 7’s. The “Road” Class has six drivers entered. Last years class winner, Daniel Cowley in his Austin 7 Special, starts favourite. Daniel did not have it all his own way, last year and will have to work very hard to maintain this kind of form.
In the much quicker “Track” division, last season winner Terry Griffin and his Austin 7 Special just pipped Paul Geering to the win by just 0.09s.There will be a real scrap for this class. The Austin Sevens class are so competitive, it could be anyone’s win.
The ACSMC Championship Class runs next. There are only two entries, David Brown in a Renault Clio and Mike Williams in a Westfield SeiW. Mike’s Westfield has the class on performance but he might have to work quite hard.
Then it will be the Porsche Club GB Speed Championship turn. With 14 drivers and 11 cars entered, the class will be hotly contested. Tim Barber and David Hilton in the 996 911GT3RS should start favourite, but there are some quick 911s and 944s in the class. It’s going to be down to the best performance on the day.
The next batch starts with the TVR class. There will be some great noise when these drivers take to the line. It’s probably going to be between Jes Firth in his Griffith and Mark Harris in the Cerbera. It looks like it’ll be go down to the wire!
Then to complete the third batch it’s the lovely cars that form the ‘Classic Marques Speed Championship’ Class. This class has entries from all over the country and in some great cars. Everything from a modern Honda S2000 of Phil Ludbrook to the Fiat Abarth TC Corsa of Phil Jones will be taking to the hill. These beautifully presented cars are always worth checking out in the paddock and watching run the hill. The class winner? Far to difficult to predict!
Batch Four brings out the Mazda MX5 Class, sponsored by The Window Doctor. Last year’s Meadens Skoda Gurston Down Champion, Mark Crookall and his RS, will be the driver / car combination to beat. Mark will have some stiff competition, Graham Hadley in his MK2 improved markedly at the Test Day so it will be interesting to see how that goes. How long will the class record survive?
One of Gurston Down’s new classes comes next Road Going Series Production up to 1400cc. There are three entries in this class and looking at previous form John Davey, the MD of our Top Ten Challenge sponsor, in his quick MG Midget is likely to take the class.
The Road Going Series Production Class, 1401cc to 2000cc, sponsored by Record-Designs runs next. Tim Foster, last years class champion, and his lovely Lotus Elan start favourite. Simon Neve returns after an absence so that might give the Subaru Impreza of Shaun and Sarah Fudge something to think about. And John Maycock’s Mazda MX5 might just be in the mix. This class is fairly open at the moment and it will be interesting to see what happens on the day.
Batch Five begins with The Road Going Specialist Production Class, sponsored by Fieldfare Trailers. This class is always competitive. It will be interesting to see how Tony Wiltshire gets on with his Lotus Elise. It’s likely to be between Clive Skipper in his 2.0 Caterham HPC, Adrian Lewis in his Westfield for the first place.

The Over 2000cc Modified Series Production Class, sponsored by Meadens Skoda, sees that gorgeous Aston Martin Vantage of Tim Painter and Andrew Fraser entered. Although, they ran their equally pretty, Porsche 911GT3 at test day. Whichever car they bring, they will start as favourite. Hopefully, Mark Walker’s 4.0 Porsche Cayman S, has had it’s turbo fixed so he will be able to join the fray.
The Over 2000cc Modified Specialist Production Class, sponsored by Gates of Brockenhurst, is a four car line up. This class is always far too difficult to predict, it could be anyone’s.
The Kelvin Jouhar sponsored Historically Interesting Class, runs next. This class has a big entry and as always there will be some lovely machinery on show. Mike Broome’s 1.6 Alexis Mk 17 F3, Jeremy Smithson’s Lotus Elan FHC, Fyrth Crosse’s Dempster Ensign LNF3, Sue Hayes’ Palliser WDF3 and the Chevron B19 of Amanda and Richard George are all out. Form suggests this will be Richard George’s class.
Batch Six is up next with Mark Mortimer in his Mallock17b being the only entry in the Hillclimb Super Sports Class.
